Every year in January, in association with market research specialists Gfk, Accord releases a Travel Booking Trends series comparing year-on-year holiday booking data. This week’s data covers the last week of December and the first week of January.
Towards the end of December, the total number of travel bookings decreased by 7%, with cruise, city break and beach holidays all on the decline. This booking slowdown continued into the first week of January, with total tour packages falling by 20% year-on-year. On the other hand, possibly inspired by the brief snowfall experienced in the UK, ski holidays grew by 5% during the final week of December.
In terms of destinations, Turkey in particular has experienced an enormous bounce back compared to last year, growing by a whopping 122% in the first of January.
Using data from Hitwise, we can also see that TripAdvisor is still the top ranking travel site, who are closely followed by booking.com. Web traffic data also reveals that villa and escorted tour websites have seen the largest traffic increase over this time period, growing by 35.4% and 35.7%, respectively.
