ABTA Holiday Habits Report 2022

After a three-year break, ABTA has just launched their Holiday Habits report for 2022.

The report assesses how people travelled between September 2021 and August 2022, the first real opportunity to do so since COVID-19 restrictions were introduced in early 2020.

The report also highlights the percentage of people taking holidays (UK and overseas), the average number of holidays taken and how this differs by demographic. Our Head of Analytics, Kara Bennett shares her top takeaways.

Accord’s key takeaways

  • Of those people who took a holiday (UK or abroad) between September 2021 and August 2022, only 39% took a holiday rolled over from the pandemic, 74% made a new booking. As we move into 2023, the proportion of new bookings will increase.

  • There has been little change in the top destinations visited. As predicted by many, in response to the ‘new normal’, people are creatures of habit. And it didn’t take long for old habits to return.

  • 45% of people took a holiday abroad - this compares with 64% in the 2019 survey. So, travel is still very much in recovery.

  • When looking ahead regarding intent to travel, the gap between 2019 and 2022 is narrower - in 2019 70% of people were planning to travel abroad in the next 12 months. In 2022, this figure is 61%.

  • Holiday protection will be taken more seriously alongside a higher demand for travel professionals, ease of booking and flexible terms. Easily digestible, comprehensive yet succinct, information is key.
